Upper Mustang Trek

The Upper Mustang Trek leads trekkers into the isolated and mystical Kingdom of Mustang, a trans-Himalayan region nestled along Nepal’s border with Tibet. This hidden land, also known as Lo, offers a rare glimpse into a traditional Tibetan-influenced culture, with its distinct arid landscapes, high cliffs, and vibrant, rocky formations. The trek begins in Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang, and follows an ancient salt trade route, passing through villages and monasteries steeped in history and spiritual significance. As you move forward, the stark landscape and dry atmosphere create a dramatic contrast to the lush greenery found in many other trekking areas of Nepal.

The trail takes trekkers through a unique environment, where panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri peaks dominate the skyline. The final destination, Lo Manthang, is a captivating medieval town that was once the seat of the Kingdom of Lo. This walled city is home to ancient monasteries, rock paintings, and the King’s palace, offering a fascinating cultural experience. Along the way, trekkers also explore Ghar Gompa, an ancient monastery believed to be over 1,200 years old, known for its rock paintings and the belief that wishes made here will come true. The trek provides the perfect balance of spiritual immersion and natural beauty, making it an unforgettable journey.

The Upper Mustang Trek is considered challenging due to the high altitude (ranging from 3,000m to 3,800m) and dry air, which can affect newcomers to such altitudes. However, the trek’s slower pace allows for proper acclimatization. Trekkers should expect 5 to 7 hours of walking per day, often through dusty, windy paths. The region’s remoteness and altitude require careful planning, but the reward is a trek that takes you through one of the most culturally rich and visually striking regions in Nepal.

Due to its location in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, Upper Mustang is a rare trekking destination that can be visited almost year-round, even during the monsoon months (June to September). However, winter treks should be avoided due to the heavy snow in the higher regions. To enter Upper Mustang, trekkers are required to obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), costing

$500 for 10 days with an additional $50 per day if the trek exceeds that duration. The region’s remoteness means you must travel with an authorized trekking agency and in a minimum group of two. The trek itself offers not only natural beauty and cultural discovery but also an unforgettable journey through the ancient Tibetan Buddhist kingdom of Upper Mustang.
