One of the main highlights of the trek is the awe-inspiring Phoksundo Lake, a turquoise gem nestled in the Himalayan mountains. The lake, known for its deep blue color, is the deepest lake in Nepal and is surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks, making it a photographer’s paradise. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the Ringmo Village, which is home to the Bon Po religion, and visit ancient monasteries like Shey Gompa, adding a cultural dimension to the trek.

As you trek towards Phoksundo Lake, you’ll pass through remote Tibetan villages, where the lifestyle remains largely unchanged for centuries. The friendly locals, who practice Tibetan Buddhism, are known for their hospitality and warmth. Itinerary

Day 1: Flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj 

  • Altitude: 150m

  • Flight Duration: 50 minutes

  • Highlights: Scenic flight to Nepalgunj
    After breakfast, we take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a town near the Indian border and close to Bardiya National Park. Nepalgunj is a key transportation hub for western Nepal. You’ll have the afternoon to rest and acclimatize. Overnight stay in Nepalgunj.

Day 2: Flight to Juphal, Trek to Dunai 

  • Altitude: 2,320m

  • Flight Duration: 35 minutes

  • Trek Duration: 3-4 hours

  • Highlights: Riverside trek to Dunai
    In the morning, we fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal, where our trek begins. From Juphal, we follow a trail that descends through local villages, passing the Roop Ghar, and eventually reach Dunai, the administrative headquarters of the Dolpo region. We will stay overnight in Dunai.

Day 3: Trek from Dunai to Chhapka

  • Altitude: 2,670m

  • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours

  • Highlights: Scenic rural landscapes
    After breakfast, we begin our trek towards Chhapka, a small village with a few houses and a local lodge. The trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, with terraced fields and villages along the way. We will overnight in a lodge in Chhapka.

Day 4: Trek from Chhapka to Jharana Hotel 

  • Altitude: 3,370m

  • Trek Duration: 6-7 hours

  • Highlights: Views of Nepal’s highest waterfall
    Today, we trek through forests of cedars and ascend gradually to the Jharana Hotel. En route, we will see the spectacular 330-meter-high waterfall, the highest in Nepal. The evening offers views of the distant Phoksundo Lake. We overnight at the Jharana Hotel.

Day 5: Trek from Jharana Hotel to Phoksundo Lake

  • Altitude: 3,610m

  • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours

  • Highlights: Descent through birch forests to Phoksundo Lake
    After breakfast, we start our descent through birch forests, cross a bridge over the Phoksundo River, and continue to the ranger station near Phoksundo Lake. We will spend the night near the lake, at a homestay or lodge, and enjoy the serenity of this stunning location.

Day 6: Rest Day at Phoksundo Lake

  • Altitude: 3,610m

  • Highlights: Explore Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo village
    We take a day to explore Phoksundo Lake, known for its deep turquoise color and stunning scenery. We also visit Ringmo village, a typical Tibetan village, and explore its monasteries and Bon religious sites. One of the most famous sites is Shey Gompa, established in the 11th century. This is a day to relax and soak in the beauty of the area.

Day 7: Trek from Phoksundo Lake to Sangta

  • Altitude: 2,520m

  • Trek Duration: 4-5 hours

  • Highlights: Return trek to Sangta
    After our exploration of Phoksundo Lake, we begin our return trek to Sangta. The trail takes about 4-5 hours, and we will stay overnight at a lodge in Sangta.

Day 8: Trek from Sangta to Juphal

  • Altitude: 2,320m

  • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours

  • Highlights: Return to Juphal
    Today, we trek from Sangta back to Juphal. It is a straightforward trek as we retrace our steps, enjoying the last glimpses of the Dolpo region. We will stay overnight in Juphal.

Day 9: Flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj, then Kathmandu

  • Flight Duration: 35 minutes from Juphal to Nepalgunj, 50 minutes from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu

  • Highlights: Scenic flights back to Kathmandu & Special Farewell Dinner in Kathmandu
    We take a flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj and then another flight back to Kathmandu. After arriving in Kathmandu, we’ll enjoy a celebratory dinner to mark the end of our trek. We’ll stay overnight in Kathmandu before departing the next day.

Itinerary Extension Option:

If you wish to explore more of Kathmandu, the itinerary can be extended to include additional days in the capital. In Kathmandu, visit iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Pashupatinath Temple, a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site; Boudhanath Stupa, one of the world’s largest Buddhist stupas; and Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), offering panoramic valley views and a blend of Hindu-Buddhist heritage. 

Explore the historic Durbar Squares—Kathmandu Durbar Square, home to Hanuman Dhoka Palace and the Living Goddess Kumari; Patan Durbar Square, renowned for its Newari architecture and Krishna Mandir; and Bhaktapur Durbar Square, a medieval gem featuring Nyatapola Temple and vibrant pottery squares. Conclude your day in Thamel, a lively hub for shopping, nightlife, and authentic Nepali cuisine.
